Health and safety regulations were broke by an egg box factory, resulting in a fine to the owners for the asbestos found in the production.

Two years ago, the Omni-Pac factory of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk was almost closed with the loss of 200 jobs. Wednesday, the company admitted to the Norwich Crown Court that they breached health and safety laws, putting their employees at risk. The health concerns would have also shut the company down due to inefficient staffing. The fines and costs of potentially exposing the staff to asbestos will be to the tune of 136,000 pounds.

The company originally used partial asbestos in their Styrofoam packaging, even though the material has been known to cause health problems for more than 20 years. During mitigation, the company stated that they had made attempts to carry out work that would address the problem of employee exposure to asbestos. The company was forced to pay the hourly wages for the time that employees were exposed to the asbestos, costing the company more than 86,000 pounds alone. The court also ordered Omni-Pac to pay a 55,000 pound fine for endangerment to the employees.
