A cabin in South Carolina is the backdrop for an unusual mystery. When all the deadly asbestos located in the cabin disappeared. The cabin had been awaiting abatement, or the safe removal, of the asbestos.
Hundreds of pounds of material containing asbestos were stolen from a cabin in South Carolina. The old cabin, built in the 1930’s, was to undergo renovations until it was found that asbestos was present in the floor tiles, joint seals and wiring. The work was put on hold until the $3,000 for abatement could be raised. Within two months of the discovery, all the items containing asbestos were taken from the cabin; no one knows who took it, or where the asbestos was taken.
The situation may look like a blessing, but illegally dumping asbestos can lead to a public health hazard. Asbestos, when removed and dumped unsafely, can become unstable and break down. The particles can be breathed in and become lodged in the lungs. This situation can lead to many different types of asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer, can take years to develop and is often times deadly when detected.
