Asbestos Amendment Period Almost Over

The allotted period of time for consultations regarding amendments to asbestos legislation is coming to a close. The Health a Safety Commission reminds legislators that the window will be closed on January 31st.

The legislation is trying to implement changes to the European asbestos worker protection laws, as well as making statutory protections for those people working with asbestos. This would be achieved by introducing a single, lower control limit for worker exposure to any type of asbestos material and requiring training specific to handling asbestos to those working with the material. The consultation was brought about by new research, which shows that risk from asbestos containing textured decorative coatings is comparable to the risk from work with asbestos cement, work which does not require a license.

The proposed measure will not require a license when working with this material. Work with more deadly types of asbestos material will still require special handling and training. Texture coatings do contain small amounts of white asbestos, but it is bound in a matrix that does not allow asbestos fibers into the air when it is worked with or removed. The consultation period will last for 12 weeks.
