Franklin County, Utah decided to stop renovations on an opera house this week after concerns arose over asbestos. The lease for the building has not been updated, and the county could be liable for asbestos exposure if work continues.

The Worm Creek Opera House was undergoing renovations this week, with the top priority a new roof. But after tests confirmed that the roof contained asbestos, the county of Franklin decided to stop work until a valid lease for the building could be obtained. If there were no valid lease, the county would be responsible for any danger posed by removing the asbestos; the open roof was patched with tar to prevent asbestos exposure in the short term.

Though there is no imminent danger of asbestos exposure to the public, the county will not allow work to continue until liability can be established. Asbestos exposure can lead to a multitude of respiratory diseases, including emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that has been linked to asbestos exposure, and is a result of asbestos fibers becoming stuck in the lining of the lungs. Illnesses associated with asbestos exposure can take years or decades to manifest, and can often times be untreatable at the time of detection.
