An Ohio company was handed a fine in regards to improperly removing asbestos from a Dayton building. The company had to repeatedly clean the area up to comply with safety and health standards.

The company was given a fine after the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency found that they had not removed asbestos in a Dayton building prior to demolition. The company acknowledged from the start of the project that asbestos was present, but reported that they had removed all of the hazardous material prior to beginning demolition. The Regional Air Pollution Control Authority checked the site and found that a large amount of asbestos remained in the building.

If asbestos is mishandled or ignored during demolition, fibers from the dangerous substance can break off and become airborne. People can then breath the fibers in, where they become lodged in the lung tissue, keeping the lungs from absorbing oxygen. As a result of asbestos exposure, victims can develop asbestosis, emphysema or mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer. Mesothelioma is almost always a result of asbestos exposure, and can often be deadly. The company was fined $5,000, and the remainder of the asbestos has been removed.
