A bill proposing $140 billion for asbestos lawsuit restitution is set to go before Senate within a month. Senate Majority leader Bill Frist told Minority Leader Harry Reid that he has the votes to bring the bill to the floor.

A liability fund for people harmed by asbestos may be in the making. Senate will be hearing the arguments for and against as early as February 6th. Majority Leader Bill Frist told the Minority Leader that he had enough votes to bring the bill before Senate. Asbestos was used widely before the 1970’s for fireproofing and insulation, until the material was deemed harmful. Inhalation of asbestos can cause cancer, emphysema and other breathing disorders. Millions of lawsuits, including those of people that are not ill but were exposed to asbestos, have been clogging the governmental systems for more than two decades.

The fund would be an account sourced from the multitude of companies that are involved in the lawsuit. The fund would allow restitution for the cases that courts have judged in favor of the victim. This would free up funds and time for companies, victims and the government alike.
