A Scotland school recently removed asbestos laden tiles and deposited them outside a storage garage across the street, where children walk past daily to attend class. Since mid-December, the caretaker, and parent of students, has been passed from agency to agency to get someone to remove the hazardous material.
Geoff Horton, caretaker at St Saviour's C of E Primary School, Verulam Avenue, Walthamstow, Scotland is furious. For almost a month, he has been trying to get health officials to remove asbestos tiles that were removed from the school and dumped across the street. While the material was removed from the school itself, children that are walking to and from school pass by the material every day. He is upset, and concerned for his own children, which attend the school.
"I can't believe I phoned on December 19, the day before the school closed for the Christmas holidays, and when the children came back for the new term, the panels were still lying there," he said. When Geoff tried to call authorities to pick up the material, he was given another number to call. This agency passed him on to a third number, which gave him a case number to follow up on. He was then given an apology, and an assurance that disposal was in the works.
The Corporation of London, the agency responsible for asbestos removal, has been contacted about the disposal. The tiles have “Asbestos” written on them, the only sign of the potentially dangerous materials.
