Prospects Heights Middle School in Orange County VA has detected asbestos in a wing of the school. While health officials have been called in to test air quality, parents are still unsure about sending their children to a potentially harmful building. A 30 day asbestos abatement treatment is scheduled for the middle of this year, during routine renovations.
Parents were wary of sending their children to the Head Start after school program at Prospects Heights Middle School on Thursday. Though the after school program promotes learning and teamwork, parents had problems with the fact that the wing that holds the program tested positive for asbestos. Officials were called in to test ceiling tiles before renovations began, which tested positive for the poison. But officials further explained that air born particles were not detected, and would not be an issue if the tiles were left alone.
The renovations were scheduled for March this year, but a 30 day asbestos abatement treatment will require that students be moved from the affected wing while they remove the tiles. This will remove any danger of air born asbestos particles and, in turn, remove any danger to the students. The programs in the affected wing will be moved to a nearby high school, while employees will be relocated to different parts of the building.
School spokeswoman Gena Keller announced that the planned renovations will be delayed until the asbestos is cleared, and that the abatement will be budgeted into the planned expenses. She also said that some of the carpeting in the wing tested positive for asbestos. Until the carpet can be removed safely, vacuuming will be put on hold.
