A Widow in Washington State has won a battle with the company that exposed her husband to asbestos. The woman had filed a claim with the company, only to be turned down before the case went to trial.
After working for 42 years as a millwright with Longview Fibre Company, William Crawford felt that he could trust the company completely. But when he learned that the insulation material he was working with could be deadly, he found out that the company might not be as supportive as he thought. Crawford developed mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer that results from asbestos exposure. He passed away in 2002, just months after being diagnosed with the aggressive disease. His widow filed a claim with Fibre for restitution, since they were the one’s that had exposed he husband to the hazardous substance.
Fibre denied the claim, considering that they terminated use of the material as soon as it was linked to respiratory diseases. The Cowlitz County Superior Court heard the case instead, and ruled in favor of the widow. The amount of money awarded has not bee released, but will most likely be paid as a settlement; Longview Fibre has not yet filed an appeal and has not released a statement as yet indicating they will fight the decision.
